Abstract

The dried flower of Woodfordia fructicosa Kurz commonly known as Dhataki was successively extd. with petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol and water depending on the increasing order of the polarity. The Sucessive Methanolic Ext. (SME) which recorded promising antioxidant and anti-lipoxygenase activity was subjected to activity guided fractionation by column chromatog. The SME2 fraction obtained was subjected to preparatory HPLC to obtain the active principle. IR, LC-MS and NMR spectral data revealed that the active principle is 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid (Gallic acid). DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-Ppicrylhydrazyl radical) and ABTS [2,2-azino-bis (3-Et benzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] free radical scavenging assay revealed that isolated gallic acid has strong antioxidant activity comparable to that of ascorbic acid and gallic acid (Sigma) resp. Significant anti-lipoxygenase activity was also obsd. which is comparable to Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) indomethacin. The present study successfully demonstrated the biol. activities of gallic acid isolated from Woodfordia fructicosa. [on SciFinder(R)]
