Abstract

Hydroxyproline rich glycoproteins (HRGPs) are important covalently cross-linked structural proteins in the primary cell wall and have an important role in defense mechanism of plant cell in response to pathogen attack. It is induced in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) seedlings in response to an invasion from Sclerospora graminicola (Sacc.) Schroet. causal pathogen of downy mildew disease. HRGPs purified by Sephadex G200 gel filtration followed by reverse phase HPLC was characterized by native and SDS PAGE. Immunocytochem. localization studies by Confocal laser scanning microscopy showed crosslinking of proteins in the cell walls in highly resistant cv. IP 18296. The relevance of accumulation of HRGPs with respect to their role in pearl millet defense against downy mildew disease is discussed. [on SciFinder(R)]
