Abstract

Kinetic studies of the oxidn. of L-arabinose, D-ribose and D-xylose by manganese(III) sulfate has been carried out in sulfuric acid medium at 30°C spectrophotometrically at λmax=500 nm. The reaction shows first order dependence on [Mn(III)]0 and [substrate]0. Variation of [H2SO4]0 ionic strength of the medium, addn. of reaction product Mn(II) and addn. of anions such as Cl-, SO42-. F-do not alter the rate, while lowering the dielec. const. of the medium increase the rate slightly. Activation parameters have been evaluated using Arrhenius and Eyring plots. Homogeneous oxidn. of aldopentoses, leading to the formation of the corresponding acids namely arabonic acid, ribonic acid and lyxonic acid and xylonic acid was obsd. A mechanism involving the formation of a enediol from pentose which reacts with Mn(III) in rate limiting step is suggested. [on SciFinder(R)]
