Review : In the paper an easy-to-verify criterion for a not necessarily connected block design to be X−1-balanced is given (X denotes a v×v real symmetric and positive definite matrix). The criterion states that a block design is X−1-balanced if and only if γX−1 is an inverse of (the information matrix) C for some γ>0. Consequences of the criterion, resulting from using the particular cases of X leading to the variance balanced and efficiency balanced block designs, are considered as well. This criterion generalizes many results available in the literature. The theoretical considerations are illustrated by an example.
