A simple, rapid and highly sensitive spectrophotometric method was proposed to det. dapsone, an antileprotic and antibacterial non-steroidal drug, using resorcinol in sulfuric acid medium. The method involves the diazotization of dapsone in sulfuric acid medium followed by a coupling reaction with resorcinol to give a pink colored azo product with a λmax of 530 nm which was stable for 2 h. Sulfuric acid medium gave excellent results when compared to alc., acetic acid, and sodium hydroxide medium. The common excipients did not interfere in the proposed method and the percentage recovery of the drug was 99.5-100.5. Thus, this method can be adopted as an alternative to the existing spectrophotometric methods. [on SciFinder(R)]
