Abstract

The title reaction is first order with respect to chloramine-T (I), glutamic acid, and H+. Ionic strength, addn. of Cl-, and presence of the reaction product, p-toluenesulfonamide, have negligible effect on the reaction rate. The reaction was studied at different temps., and activation parameters were evaluated. A mechanism in which the zwitterion interacts with protonated I was proposed to account for the obsd. kinetics.
